Aquaponics

Aquaponics is the process of growing plants using water to provide nutrients to plants instead of soil. A common way to passively produce nutrients is to incorporate fish into the system. With these systems you can use significantly less space and resources to grow food and plants, while also provide an unique environment to inhabit.

In this studio were were tasked with designing and producing a functional aquaponics system with live fish that would not look out of place in a home setting.

Our system allowed you to adjust the height of the beds to accomidate the growth of the plants and relied on on a pump to supply water to the beds and to airate the water, the act of filtering is done by the plants in the system and provides clean water for the fish. The plants you see above were grown completely from the sytem and include both beans and basil. This proof of concept used commercially available PVC, tubing, and rack. additionally a hand made wooden assebly to allow for adjustment of the light and ease of adjustment for beds with pullies.
